Short Bio


Mauri Kaipainen (PhD) is adjunct professor (Docent) of Cognitive Science at University of Helsinki, former professor of Media Technology at Södertörn UniversitySweden (2008 - 2018). His background is in education, musicology and cognitive science, his alma mater being the University of Helsinki. He earned his PhD in 1994 on a computational model of the musical knowledge ecology (musicology). Before the present, he has been affiliated as professor of applied cognitive science at the Media Lab of University of Art and Design Helsinki (2000-04, today Aalto University). As professor of new media af the Dept. of Informatics, Tallinn University (2005-08) he established the international master programme Interactive Media and Knowledge Environments. The theoretical core of his publications relates to the dynamic system nature and environmental embeddedness of mind. His ideas have contributed to a number of collaborations, including interactive media projects, e-participation, cultural heritage and media technology. His current research agenda focuses on dynamical concept-construction, assumed as a core cognitive function. Recently he has re-established his life-time interest to music composition, based on theoretical ideas that bridge music theory and cognitive science.
